| CAMPUS SUMMARY |
 |
Benedictine College is located in historic Atchison, Kansas, which is a small city on the west bank of the Missouri River, forty-five miles north of Kansas City, twenty miles north of Leavenworth,Kansas, and twenty miles south of St. Joseph, Missouri.
In 1858 St. Benedict's College, an all male school, was founded by Benedictine monks. In 1924 Benedictine sisters founded Mount Saint Scholastica College, an all female school. The two colleges merged in 1971 to form Benedictine College, a co-educational institution. During the years since then, Benedictine College has formed its own identity, one steeped in the history and tradition of its parent institutions.
Heir to the 1500 years of Benedictine dedication to learning, Benedictine College in its own time is ordered to the goal of wisdom lived out in responsible awareness of oneself, God and nature, family and society. Its mission as a liberal arts, Catholic, Benedictine, residential college is the education of men and women within a community of faith and scholarship. |

| UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS |
 |
As America's Discovery College, Benedictine is committed to providing a student-centered teaching and learning environment, supportive of a uniquely creative, collaborative and challenging learning experience.
Benedictine College's discovery program prepares students for lifelong learning by engaging them in interdisciplinary Discovery Projects. These projects offer students a meaningful context for their liberal arts education by integrating mulitple perspectives, translating understanding into performance, and extending learning beyond the classroom. Discovery Projects, designed for acquiring learning skills through the pursuit of intrinsically valued questions, are distinguished by three learning strategies: 1. Active learning - engaging students experientially in the learning process, 2. Collaborative learning - working with faculty toward common goals, 3. Creative learning - producing original works and research.
In a learner-centered atmosphere, students are given the opportunity to get a hands-on head-start in their career while making a real difference in the world around them. Graduates who participate in the Discovery program are better prepared for the collaborative and creative demands they will encounter in the workplace. |
